Abstract

This paper covers the results of a survey of automobile and automotive parts manufacturers on their requirements for “extended-life” chassis lubricants. Opinions on the desired physical and chemical specifications varied rather widely. A substantial majority of those interviewed indicated a belief that the critical factor in “extended-life” lubrication is the seal rather than the lubricant. Screening test practice varied widely, but there was complete agreement that the final answer was to be found only in the vehicle under actual service conditions in the field.
