    Abstract

    The life of a turbine oil in a given application depends on such environmental factors as temperature, degree of agitation, presence of water, and active chemicals. The chemical composition of the oil is also very important.

    The functional life of a new oil can be determined by comparing it with other oils of known performance in various long-term and short-term oxidation tests, and by inhibitor content. The functional life of a used oil from a turbine system can be determined by comparing its performance in these same tests with the performance of the same oil when new. The same tests are also useful in setting lot acceptance limits for evaluating incoming shipments of oil. However, in this case, the testing will have to be confined to the short-term variety.

    Four tests for determining functional life of turbine oil are described and their usefulness discussed.
