Testing of Bearings Under Controlled Load

Source

In the course of testing a highly-loaded planetary gear-reduction system, a failure was encountered which pointed out the need for more precise information on the behavior of highly-loaded bearings and bearing installations. As this gear system was intended for airplane use, the question of weight was paramount. In view of frequent overhauls and careful inspection, long life could be sacrificed to some extent if appreciable weight savings could be obtained in return. Attempts to obtain design information of the kind required from the bearing manufacturers failed to produce the data which were needed. A bearing testing machine was accordingly designed suitable to study this particular bearing application.
