Abstract

Theories of air filtration by fibrous media have been reviewed and the pertinent equations for calculating filter pressure drop and efficiency summarized. Calculation results have been presented showing the single fiber efficiency as a function of particle size for various fiber sizes and packing densities. The existence of a most penetrating particle size for fibrous media has been demonstrated and shown to vary between 0.015 to 0.9 μm for fiber diameters of 1 to 30 μm, packing densities of 0.01 to 0.3 and filtration velocities of 1 to 100 cm/s.
