    Abstract

    Smoke with which to be concerned is that from the materials involved in the fire at its inception. The property of smoke with which to be concerned is its effect on vision. There is positive correlation between the per cent of light eliminated by smoke produced and collected in a smoke chamber and the visibility of exit signs. It is not practical to make fine distinctions between materials on the basis of the precise quantity of smoke generated under one set of conditions. It is possible and practical to reduce the dimensions of the smoke hazard by identifying materials which produce tremendous quantities of smoke. It is possible through a device such as the XP2 smoke density chamber to classify materials in terms of the rate at which available light is reduced or eliminated by the smoke produced as a result of subjecting the material to a constant source of ignition either under conditions favorable to low smoke production or under a variety of conditions.
