The Use of Tri- -Octylphosphine Oxide in Analytical Chemistry

Source

Recent discoveries at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have shown that a number of organo-phosphorus compounds are superior in many respects to tributylphosphate in the liquid-liquid extraction of uranium from solutions of its ores and fuel elements. Among these is tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (C8H17)3PO, a stable white crystalline compound, melting point 51 to 51.5 C, boiling point ∼200 to 205 C, 0.1 mm Hg, that is soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. As a consequence of this work, a program was initiated to investigate this general class of compounds as analytical reagents in the separation of other metal ions by liquid-liquid extraction. This report summarizes the data obtained in studies with tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO).
