Recent Observations on Fatigue Failure in Metals

Source

The mechanism of fatigue failure is viewed in the light of recent observations obtained by a modified taper-sectioning technique which reveals slipband contours at optical magnifications of 20,000 to 30,000 times. The observations show how the fatigue slipbands produce in the metal surface sharp notches, peaks, and intermediate contours and cause related forms of surface disintegration. Typical effects are illustrated by examples from copper and brass subjected to alternating torsion.
