Abstract

The Reflectoscope is widely used in various types of work at Douglas Aircraft Co., Inc. In some applications, contact scanning is the only practical way of doing a job. Obviously, a railway maintenance inspection would not require an axle to be removed from a car and put in a tank for underwater scanning. In pipe line work a tolerance for surface cracks is established and contact scanning with the aid of a shoe works satisfactorily. Ingots may be more conveniently tested for gas holes and cracks by contact methods.
