Abstract

The passivation current obtained from galvanostaircase polarization curves indicates whether aluminum can be passivated in a given environment. The change in passivation current with increased passivation of aluminum is much more sensitive than changes in breakdown or corrosion potentials. This great sensitivity of passivation current was used to develop a rapid screening method to determine whether a surfactant was synergistic or antisynergistic with the inhibition of aluminum by silicate at elevated temperature. The passivation current was also used to screen surfactants for inhibition of aluminum corrosion in the absence of silicate.
