    Abstract

    The fracture resistance of three high strength aluminum alloys, two titanium, and one steel alloy has been investigated with a center-cracked tension specimen. Specimen geometric dimensions such as width, thickness, and crack length, together with yield strength were studied to ascertain their influence on the Kc parameter. The specimen thicknesses ranged from 1/16 to 1/18 in., width from 3 to 12 in., and crack length from 0.5 to 7 in.

    The Kc parameter has been found to be unaffected by specimen width and crack length provided the width dimension is sufficient and the crack length/width ratio is within the range of 0.15 to 0.5. The fracture resistance is dependent upon sheet thickness and inversely proportional to yield strength.
