Abstract

This paper first gives a brief technical summary of the properties of an ultrahigh-vacuum transfer device capable of transferring specimens between two ultrahigh-vacuum (uhv) systems anywhere on earth, maintaining the specimen at uhv at all times. The major objective of this paper is to explore the application of this transfer device for the exchange of surface standards. This includes the scientific objectives to be achieved and the practical problems involved. The authors conclude that transfers between most existing surface analysis instruments should be possible without overwhelming difficulties.
