Suggested Method of Test for Direct Shear Strength of Rock Core Specimens

This method covers the determination of the direct shear strength of rock core specimens up to 6 in. in diameter. A minimum of three test specimens of any one rock type are subjected to different normal stresses during the shearing process. For each type of rock, cohesion and an angle of internal friction are determined. The principle of rock core direct shearing is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1.
