The Testing of Diaphragms to Determine Adequacy in Resisting Horizontal Forces

Source

For the purpose of this paper a diaphragm may be defined as a horizontal element in a building or structure which distributes horizontal forces in its plane to vertical resisting elements which, in turn, transmit these forces to the ground. A diaphragm is an important element in resisting forces induced by earthquake shock and in resisting wind forces or horizontal earth pressures.
