    Abstract

    There are many industries where the materials employed, and the components manufactured, often cannot provide the standard specimens required by current fracture toughness test methods, due to insufficient section thickness. With the growing importance of Damage Tolerance criteria it is evident that reliable data must be available to Design, Production, and, where necessary, Failure Investigation personnel in these areas. This investigation utilised forged ELI-grade titanium -6A1 -4V (wt%) material. Compact Tension specimens and Circumferrentially Notched Round test pieces were extracted from adjacent positions, with identical crack planes, to allow comparison of the results. Miniature test pieces were precracked under rotating bending fatigue. The results obtained from the miniature test pieces are accurate and consistent with those produced by the standard specimens.
