Abstract

This work deals with an alternative possibility of performing fracture mechanics testing with small Charpy impact specimens in the same manner as for large, three-point bend-type specimens. The procedure is based upon the determination of Ji, which claims that the J-integral for fracture resistance at stable crack propagation initiation is a characteristic value of the material. It is shown that the results of the application of this procedure are promising in the cases of brittle fracture and brittle/ductile transition.
