To understand the basic principles of the classical infrared (IR) spectrum one needs only to understand the principles of the harmonic oscillator. Certainly, to understand the origin of selection rules, quantization, etc., one will need a knowledge of quantum mechanics. However, these topics are beyond the scope of this section, and the reader is referred to several of the numerous texts on this subject [1–3].
