Abstract

This paper presents a case history on unexpectedly large settlement of a weak alluvial foundation clayey soil improved by both preloading and by use of vertical drains. An important cause of the settlement is probably secondary compression. When preloading is used to improve a clayey foundation soil, the importance of taking into account the secondary compression is emphasized.
