Lateral Strain Measurement by an Ultrasonic Method

Source

An ultrasonic method for the measurement of lateral strain of a soil specimen in triaxial tests has been developed. The measuring device combined with a triaxial cell consists of an ultrasonic detector and three ultrasonic heads which transform sound waves into electronic impulses. The ultrasonic wave, which penetrates into the triaxial cell, is reflected from the contour of the specimen, and comes back to the ultrasonic head. The measured values of lateral strains can be used not only for the evaluation of Poisson's ratio, but also for other parameters or functions required for different constitutive equations.
