The mechanisms involved in thermoelectricity permit its use as a research tool to investigate and explain changes in the solid state. Since much of this research now being reported is concerned with solid-state reactions at very low temperatures, the techniques presented here, which are useful means for investigations at any temperature, have been selected to illustrate some of their applications at elevated temperatures.
