Development of a Fluorescent Ultraviolet and Condensation Apparatus with a Light Energy Control System

Source

In order to improve the reproducibility of the alternate fluorescent ultraviolet (UV) and condensation test specified in ASTM Recommended Practice for Operating Light- and Water-Exposure Apparatus (Fluorescent UV-Condensation Type) for Exposure of Non-metallic Materials (G 53) the following modifications have been developed for the test apparatus: (1) fluorescent UV lamps are preconditioned and equipped with means to yield a stable radiant output during operational life; (2) all of the eight lamps that have been preconditioned and have similar characteristics in radiant output are installed in the apparatus at the same time; and (3) the lamp spacing and arrangement is modified and the light intensity is automatically controlled. By providing uniform distribution of irradiance with a constant level throughout the test period, these modifications improve the reproducibility of the test, increase acceleration, and facilitate operation.
