General Discussion—Comments on Working Loads for Pile Foundations

Source

During the past several years, there has been a significant increase in working loads for piling. Even higher loads are now being proposed. The rationale for proposing these high working loads and accompanying high stresses is that the allowable stress in a pile should be determined by its structural characteristics. These allowable stresses are determined by applying a factor of safety to either ultimate or yield stresses, assuming the pile to act as a short column. These then would establish maximum pile loadings, which would be modified as considered proper by the design|ing engineer if soil conditions were such that total pile loads would exceed resistance of the supporting soils or as dictated by driving stresses.
