Abstract

Unidirectional laminated composite specimens reinforced with end tabs are analyzed. The stress field in the laminate-tab interface and within the laminate is predicted using a new analysis method. The method is simple and does not require extensive numerical computations. Results are obtained in closed form. Selected examples are modeled also by finite elements in order to verify that the simple analysis method yields good results. Analyses of previously tested specimens provide a plausible explanation of observed behavior. The present analysis method facilitates specimen design and data interpretation and, therefore, aids in overcoming many of the difficulties associated with the compression testing of composite laminates.
