Two nondestructive evaluation test methods, radiography and ultrasonics, are examined for potential use in composite material characterization programs for composite structures subjected to either fatigue damage, foreign object damage, or environmental degradation. The principal goal of the work is to introduce semiquantitative test methods for measuring the size of damage zones and for defining the characteristic flaws within the zone with emphasis being placed on developing test techniques, test philosophies, and discussions on various signal processing procedures. Sample test results are presented along with a description of selected computer simulation signal processing studies.
