Abstract

A testing procedure is described wherein immersion ultrasonic cleanliness ratings obtained for 4 by 4 by 6-in. (100 by 100 by 150 mm) test specimens are used instead of microcleanliness ratings to assess the cleanliness of production heats of alloy steel. Good sensitivity and reproductibility of test results are demonstrated, and correlation with microcleanliness ratings is discussed. The major advantage is more meaningful cleanliness ratings because of the much larger volume of metal represented.
