Knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the various types of fatigue testing systems is a prerequisite to the selection of equipment for a fatigue laboratory and in the planning and execution of meaningful and economic fatigue investigations. However, fatigue testing is unique in the area of mechanical testing in that so many varieties and types of testing devices have been developed. This chapter is intended to provide a guide to the basic principles of the operation, the capabilities, and the limitations of the more commonly used fatigue testing machines as influenced by the drive systems. Specialized machines, such as those used for rolling contact fatigue testing are also dealt with.
