Abstract

Limits for safe application of combustible materials can be calculated on the basis of the performance characteristics of the materials and the response characteristics of the systems in which they are employed. The calculation required is a function of the criterion selected as a determinant of hazard. When the concentration of flammable volatiles or combustion products is the criterion of safety, calculations require material balances involving quantity of material, rate of evolution, and degree of ventilation.
