Abstract

The American Petroleum Institute currently provides standards for the evaluation of welded line pipe with the drop-weight tear test. A two-phase program investigating the drop-weight tear test specimen geometry and the relationship between transition temperatures determined by various brittle fracture tests is described. The fracture appearance transition temperature was found to be affected by specimen thickness and metallurgical conditions and in addition was distinctly higher than transition temperatures determined by four other brittle fracture tests.
