Chapter III—Analysis of Viscous Oils

Source

The analysis of viscous oils is a subject to which ASTM has devoted little attention until recent years. The bulk of the ASTM standard methods of test that have been applied to the lubricant portion of petroleum have dealt with performance characteristics rather than the determination of the composition of such materials. However, the problem of the characterization of the heavier fractions is one to which the petroleum industry has devoted substantial research effort. As a consequence, several books (1-6) and numerous papers (7-37) on the subject are available. It is likely that the list of ASTM methods concerned with the analysis of viscous oils will grow appreciably in the future.
