Procedures in use at the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) for standardization of cell-culture lines are summarized with illustrations. Comments on the total holdings and distribution are included with a listing and brief description of representative cell lines that may be of use in materials testing. The development of new technology for isolation and propagation of potentially useful functional human and other animal cell lines is discussed and referenced. The advantages in the use of standardized cell lines for materials testing are listed and emphasized.
