Abstract

Steel H-piles are a readily available means of providing structure support over deep calcareous formations. With knowledgeable design, cast steel tip protection, and competent field direction, H-piles can be driven through mixed formations to dependable bearing. Pipe, thin-shell, timber, or precast are less certain to reach bearing in good condition. Caissons can be used but are subject to overruns and delays in some formations. In many areas, pulled and load-tested piles have proved the value of the tip-protected H for difficult driving.
