Abstract

Saada and Townsend, in their state-of-the-art paper on laboratory strength testing of soil, present very severe criticisms of the simple shear testing method and the apparatuses presently in use. The discussers do not share this point of view. A fair assessment of a piece of equipment and of the testing procedure calls not only for an enumeration of its shortcomings, but also for a careful evaluation of the significance of these deficiencies on the measured parameters. Saada and Townsend questioned the overall usefulness of the testing method in geotechnical engineering problems.
