Chapter 2—The Systems Approach

Source

A system is a scheme or device, composed of a group of interacting human or machine elements, or both. A system behaves or expends energy according to some description and operates on information or energy or matter (or all three) in a time reference to yield information or energy or matter (or all three) to achieve a common specific purpose or objective. Starting with Part II of this book, systems are presented by which to control and assure the quality of design and the quality of conformance. These systems are management systems or schemes as contrasted to hardware systems or devices. These systems are somewhat incomplete in that only their universal features are described, that is, the features which logic and experience show to be applicable under most all circumstances. The success of any system, however, is dependent upon its ability to accommodate the specific information inputs, outputs, constraints, and environments which exist or which are required in the work situation. Therefore, the reader is cautioned not to attempt to employ the management systems described in this book without tailoring the systems to the exact working conditions.
