Abstract

Over the last ten years water-based caulks and sealants prepared from acrylic emulsions have shown a steady growth pattern. Performance cost versatility, ease of handling, and lack of toxicity and ecological problems have been the primary reasons for this increased usage. This paper presents some basic formulating technology and performance parameters that should serve as guidelines to potential producers and end users of water-based caulks and sealants. Excellent weathering resistance combined with good extensibility has resulted in some penetration of these products into higher performance applications.
