Abstract

Solvent-base acrylic sealants have been used in building construction for almost two decades; they are thermoplastic materials with good weatherability and exceptional adhesion to common building substrates. Although, initially, there was some difficulty in their manufacture, general formulating principals and physical properties are now common knowledge. Once an established formulation is obtained, the quality control of the product uses simple, standard test methods. These sealants must sometimes be heated to apply them, but the manufacturers usually supply the necessary accessories. When used within their movement capabilities, they have been successful in glazing, bedding, and caulking applications. There are various government, industrial, and international test methods and specifications to which these sealants conform.
