Comparison of European and U.S. Testing/Qualification Procedures for Structural Glazing Silicone Sealants

Source

The paper reports on the state-of-the-art test methods and qualification procedures for SSG sealants currently applied in Europe and compares those to the ASTM C-24 proposal. The test data generated show that the 50°C water immersion required by some European building code authorities results in a much lower success rate in the adhesion test than the 1 week room temperature immersion applied by the silicone sealant manufacturers in the U.S. The paper also describes the efforts to consolidate the different national test and requirement standards into one European standard and directive on structural glazing by 1992.
