This paper presents the results of a study performed to predict the effect of the dynamic component of wind pressure on an inflated single-ply roofing membrane and its attachment mechanism. The calculation is performed based on the measured power spectra of wind pressure at points on the roof of a square plan building in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The transient response factor, defined as the ratio of the fluctuating component of pressure,difference across the membrane thickness to the fluctuating component of external wind pressure, is shown to depend strongly on the ease of air flow to the space underneath the membrane and to the size of the building. Specific recommendations are tentatively proposed for the design of single-ply roofing systems against wind uplift.
