Abstract

Theory and practical experience have been combined to develop standard practices for the design and construction of exterior masonry walls. Such practices have been presented in the literature and have stood the test of time. Strict adherence to these practices is critical with todays thinner masonry walls where abuse often results in costly repair or replacement of the masonry. Examples of some of the more typical abuses the authors have observed and subsequent repairs in the areas of workmanship, moisture control and differential movement are presented.
