Modeling Studies on the Precipitation of Krypton After Implantation into Metals

Source

A rate-theory approach is applied to interpreting observations on the precipitation of krypton injected into nickel at temperatures between 300 and 830 K. At temperatures of 670 K or higher, the implanted krypton precipitates evolve into a bimodal size distribution comprising small solid precipitates and larger, faceted bubbles. The calculations explore the dependence of the observed bimodal distribution on the maximum size of the solid krypton bubbles and the effect of this dependence on bubble mobility. The analyses suggest that during the irradiation, the large bubbles move by surface diffusion control, but the solid krypton precipitates are immobile. The relevance of the krypton-nickel interaction to the maximum size of the solid krypton precipitates is discussed.
