A Comparison of Various Rugate Filter Designs

Source

A rugate filter is a multilayer reflector with a continuously varying refractive index profile. The performance desired from such a filter is the reflection of light at a single band centered at some wavelength λ0 without the associated reflectance bands at the harmonics λ0/3, λ0/5,.... Three index profiles are compared: sinusoidal variation of refractive index, sinusoidal variation of dielectric constant and sinusoidal variation of the natural log of the refractive index. The latter profile gives complete suppression of the reflectance bands at the harmonics.
