    Abstract

    Two case histories are discussed presenting the results of Sealed Double Ring Infiltrometer (SDRI) tests conducted in conjunction with laboratory test programs. Testing was performed on liner demonstration test fills and on liner materials obtained from within the SDRI test cells. One series of tests was conducted on a compacted weathered shale being used as a primary liner in a gold mine tailings facility. The second site was a test fill constructed as a demonstration for material suitability to be used as a tertiary liner in a low level mixed waste commercial landfill. In the second test, series of both fixed and flexible wall constant head permeability tests were performed. In both case histories, SDRI measured hydraulic conductivities were well within the same order of magnitude as those measured in the laboratory. In one case the field measured values were within a factor of 2 of those determined in the laboratory. Good agreement was also obtained for hydraulic conductivity between values measured using fixed wall and flexible wall testing procedures. These case histories present significant additions to the small but growing body of published data showing reasonable agreement between hydraulic conductivity measured in situ in the field and those values measured in the laboratory.
