Issues in the Development of an Advanced Ceramic Materials Selector Expert System

Source

A materials selector expert system for advanced ceramics is being designed to assist users in identifying candidate materials for gas-fueled heat exchangers and other applications which may involve processing parameters, environmental conditions, and physical constraints. The selection process will require an appropriate and relevant knowledge base of materials properties as well as applicable rules and heuristics. The NIST Structural Ceramics Database (SCD) provides the cornerstone for the materials selector expert system and supplies critical microstructural and property measurement data. The anticipated evolution of the SCD to a knowledge-based system is discussed with an emphasis on relevant development issues.
