    Abstract

    A laboratory study was conducted to determine the effect of spray droplet size and distribution on control of citrus rust mite under moist and dry post-treatment conditions. Using a droplet generator, different droplet sizes of AGRI-MEK EC (abomectin) were sprayed toward pairs of targets (mite infested Valencia oranges and water sensitive papers). The length mean diameters of spray droplets ranged from 43.9 to 693.1 μm. One half of the treated fruit received a daily spray mist of distilled water to simulate dew condition in the field; the other half were maintained in dry condition. On each fruit adult mites were counted at 3 locations representive of full coverage, partial, and no coverage. Counts were made prior to spraying and at 1, 2, and 6 days post-treatment. All acaricide treatments reduced mite populations significantly compared to untreated checks. Small droplets gave higher mite mortality than larger droplets. Mite mortality increased by wetting fruit. There were uniform coverages for small and medium size droplets and random-clustered distributions for large droplets.
