Abstract

Three methods for the study of characteristics of the human lungs are introduced based on a special inhalation technique. The technique using an aerosol bolus of defined volume being injected at any moment during inhalation is applied to detect the dispersion of an aerosol bolus in the expired air, to chart human airway dimensions out of the sedimentation of the particles during breath-holding, and to observe the clearance of radioactively labelled particles from defined regions of the lungs. Applications of the methods for diagnostic purpose are given, and the possibilities of their use for the study of human susceptibility for air pollutants are discussed.
