Abstract

Research was conducted to determine the feasibility and effect of using an ethylene based copolymer (EBC) derived from reprocessed low density polyethylene (LDPE) as an additive to improve asphalt mixture performance. The decision to use reprocessed LDPE to improve an asphalt pavement stems from both the deteriorated condition of the nation's highways, and the increasing need to develop alternative uses for materials now heading to the nation's overcrowded landfills.

Research included the determination of the method for applying the modifier to the hot mix asphalt concrete and its treatment levels. Primary concern, however, was the evaluation of the performance of the modified hot mix asphalt mixtures.
