A Simple Method of Measuring Pavement Rebound Deflection Bowl Data and Calculating Moduli

Source

A simple instrument was developed by modifying the Benkelman beam so that the ordinates of the rebound deflection bowl could be measured at five points at 75-mm intervals from the center of dual wheel load, using four additional sets of auxiliary levers and dial gauges. This instrument was used to measure the ordinates of rebound deflection bowls on selected test stretches of flexible pavements in the southern region of India. As most of these pavements consist of granular layers in the subbase and base course with a thin bituminous surface course, the rebound deflection bowls were found to be deep and narrow. The rebound deflection bowl data collected were utilized for the back calculation of E values of pavement layers by finite-element method using the computer program FEAP. The paper presents the details of the simple instrument, developed at a low cost to measure the rebound deflection bowl and a methodology for the back calculation of E values of pavement layers using the rebound deflection bowl data.
