The selection and installation of a concrete diaphragm wall by the slurry trench process simplified construction and provided high quality underground space for a 5-level garage in Baltimore, Maryland. The tieback supported wall retained the adjacent streets and utilities with surface settlement ranging from 0.5 to 0.75 in. (12.7 to 19.1 mm). Groundwater levels were maintained and seepage into the excavation was reduced to about 5 gallons per minute (0.32 L/s). Geotechnical instrumentation data confirmed satisfactory performance of the wall and tieback system; instrumentation was also key during assessment and resolution of construction problems which led to additional lateral displacement of the wall.
