Abstract

This paper discusses the use of dynamic compaction to densify miscellaneous materials that have become contaminated with low-level radioactive materials which were buried in trenches and covered with soil. After densification, the ground was compressed approximately 12.7% and cone penetration resistance readings were approximately four to six times higher than before densification. The type of equipment used for dynamic compaction, the grid spacing and number of drops at each location, and safety procedures used during the dynamic compaction operations are discussed in this paper. Environmental considerations are excluded from this paper.
