    Abstract

    A relatively simple and inexpensive mechanism is proposed for measuring the volume of fluid, nonvolatile residue (NVR) dissolved in dense solvents. The mechanism involves supporting the solvent/NVR with surface tension in an inverted transparent capillary tube and evaporating the solvent fraction to leave a continuous measurable column of NVR. The mechanism has been briefly tested on several hydrocarbon oils and has exhibited potential sensitivity over a range of at least 0.5 to 50 μL. The mechanism may be applicable to field measurement of oils extracted from surface films, porous insulations, and water. The mechanism is proposed as an embryonic basis for development into a potential ASTM standard.
