Abstract

This symposium emphasized functional performance rather than physical performance. The idea of facility standards is not new. In the first century BC, Vitrivius opened the discussion. Barriers to development of facility standards include a wide range of issues including language, owner objectives, occupancy requirements, methodology, usage and performance predictability. Any standards developed by ASTM would be voluntary.
