The New High-Toughness Ceramics

Source

The principal microstructural sources of toughening are reviewed, with emphasis on comparisons between theory and experiment. Process zone mechanisms, such as transformation and microcracking, as well as bridging mechanisms induced by either ductile networks or fiber/whiskers are afforded primary consideration. Microstructural variables that allow toughness optimization are established.
